Behavioural factors

Individual behaviours will influence the extent of erosion risk. Most of the behaviours can be prevented or modified and depend mainly on effective awareness building.

Common behavioural factors influencing erosive tooth wear:

  • Excessive consumption of acidic foods and drinks
  • “Healthy” lifestyle: diets high in acidic fruits and vegetables
  • Unusual eating and drinking habits (e.g. holding drinks in the mouth)
  • Oral hygiene practices (e.g. excessive, at inadequate times with abrasive products)
  • Night-time baby bottle feeding with an acidic beverage
  • Frequent consumption of specific alcoholic drinks (e.g. alcopops) and designer drugs
  • Alcoholism
