Signs and symptoms of erosion

As clinical signs are subtle, erosion is not easy to diagnose in its early stages of development.

Often due to the lack of pain, symptoms of erosion are only noticed once the lesions are advanced and dentine is exposed. Therefore, it is important that dental professionals and patients are aware of the early signs of erosion for effective preventive counselling.

First visible signs

Healthy tooth: note the faint growth lines of the tooth, the perikymata.

The first visible signs of erosion:

Initial loss of surface texture (perikymata)
Localised silky and shiny tooth surfaces
Sometimes dull surfaces
Formation of rounded dimples
Be on the look out for these signs before patients suffer from more substantial hard tissue loss. Carefully drying patients’ teeth may facilitate diagnosis.
