Aetiology of erosion

Erosion is a disorder of multifactorial aetiology.

The lack of data on the frequency of various aetiologies of erosion as well as the frequent involvement of other tooth wear processes make it difficult to estimate the importance of individual causes. Nevertheless, dietary intake and general health are likely to play a major role, next to behaviours that support erosive processes, such as inadequate tooth brushing techniques.

Causes of erosion can be classified as intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Click on each cause to find out more.
